PDF   Print   E-mail
Country: China

2007 sees Guan Ya Education Group celebrate its decennial. It is the largest English language school in Liaoning province. In Shenyang, the provincial capital, we have 16 branches in most districts across the city. We are a well-known local brand and well thought-of by locals and expats alike. The school’s various private branches have around 10,000 students, in addition to around 25 foreign teachers; Guan Ya employs around 400 Chinese teachers. We are proud of our four-yellow-star rating on the Buxiban.com website. We are also SAFEA approved.

We're looking for passionate, responsible and energetic teachers. Our teachers earn 5000-5500 per month (depending on experience and qualifications) for 20 hours per week and then 100 RMB per hour for any overtime they choose to do. A teacher can earn 9000 RMB per month by working 30 hours a week, but overtime is not compulsory. We have around 25 foreign teachers, so there are many people to meet and socialize with. Our private classes are small, 10-20 students. You will be mainly teaching children aged between 8 and 16. We also get many contracts from public schools, mostly middle and elementary schools. Typically, most of your classes would fall on the weekend, with maybe an evening and a couple of mornings/afternoons on weekdays. You would have 2 days off a week, usually consecutively. There is a good support network to help you get started, a full orientation package and ongoing training if required.

The contract includes a 5000 RMB bonus after 6 months; a free, private, furnished apartment with all utilities paid including local phone and broadband Internet access, health insurance and paid vacation. Please have a look at our website at http://english.guanyaenglish.com for more information.

Most of our teachers work in Shenyang, provincial capital of Liaoning province. It retains much of the real, unadulterated Chinese culture and character that is lacking in Shanghai and starting to disappear in Beijing. It's a large teeming modern city where the Manchurian Qing dynasty was founded. As a city its full of history, full of genuine, unspoilt Chinese character, full of fascinating tourist spots, and above all, home to some of the most welcoming Chinese food to the foreign palate – few visitors to Shenyang have the right to complain about the cuisine. Shenyang is, above all other things, uncompromisingly Chinese, yet it also boasts a mixture of ethnic and national groups, a large number Chinese-Koreans, Hui Muslims, Manchurians and expat South Koreans. It's a great place to learn or improve your putonghua as there is no heavy local dialect.

We also have a vacancy in Jinzhou, a smaller nearby city, which includes all the same benefits listed above. It is small by Chinese standards with 700,000 people in the city and about 3.5 million in the county. Jinzhou excels in culture and the arts, supporting a Chinese opera troupe and a troupe of acrobatic performers. The city is about 3 hours by bus or train from Shenyang at the cost of about 50 RMB.  Jinzhou lies on the Shenyang-Beijing train route, so there are frequent connections to destinations both north and south.  Direct trains also run to Dalian and Chengde.

Only a handful of foreigners currently live in Jinzhou so you’ll be considered something of novelty, however the locals will treat you with the utmost kindness. The teachers who have been there in the past say that it was a pleasant experience. The city and air is much cleaner than Shenyang and the people seem friendlier because it is a smaller city.

Founded in the 2nd century BC, the city was important as a military and agricultural center until it developed into a textile and rail hub in the early 20th century. It was a thriving walled city in Ming Dynasty times - although little of the city wall remains these days. Prosperity in the 21st century has seen Jinzhou become a large and attractive township in an increasingly comfortable corner of the country. Compared to larger cities Jinzhou is fresh and spacious. It many ways Jinzhou is a city of ideal size and population in a fertile and prospering area of Liaoning.

There are several historical sites in the outer city, the most beautiful of which is the Guanyin Cave, 10 minutes drive away from town, where an attractive statue of the female Goddess of Mercy sits tall in her own grotto. Also the War Memorial Museum and park, hosts a remarkably complete collection of exhibits from the civil war. Jinzhou was the centre of the Liaoshen Campaign, and at the Battle of Jinzhou, when the Communists took the upper hand in a victory that changed the course of the entire war. Jinzhou’s signature attraction is the Guangji Tower, a beautiful example of Liao Dynasty Buddhist architecture dating from the year 1057. Jinzhou’s oldest structure is the Youguo Temple, a small, little known temple reputably 1,500 years old.

Close by are the charming towns and cities along the coast of the Bohai Sea. Most notably Xingcheng - with its preserved Ming dynasty city walls and unspoilt beaches it is becoming increasingly popular with foreign tourists. Only an hour from the city is also the famous Bijia Shan, a remarkable Buddhist Island accessibly only during a low tide.
